Wow, what a night! Thanks to some friends from DVOC we had an opportunity to visit a Saw-whet owl banding station. Northern Saw-whet's are a super secretive migrating owl. Years ago people didn't even realize they migrated, much less that there were so many of them around. You may not have realized it but that was a Saw-whet on the old Pennsylvania Wild Resources Conservation license plates.
Saw-whets are killer hard to find during the day. Imagine a teeny weeny owl the size of your fist that likes to hide motionless in thick scrubby evergreens. You have to put in some time to find one, or get incredibly lucky. (or so I'm told - I have not found one in daylight yet!)
